In the family way: one thing is booming in Vietnam: its population

Article Abstract:

Vietnam's yearly demographic growth rate of 2.2%, the seventh highest in the world, poses a dire threat to the country's economic future. The 1992 population of 71 million will be larger than 80 million by 2000 if the growth rate does not slow. The Vietnamese government has reacted to this staggering growth by advocating the increased use of contraception. However, three hindrances stand in the way: ignorance about how to use contraceptives; traditional Confucian preference for having sons; and the desire of farmers to have helpers.
