Flume tank puts trial rigs to the test

Article Abstract:

Noel Dugardein, the head netmaker at the Vlaamse Visserij Cooperatie in Oostende developed double and triple rigs for fishermen in England and Ireland.These nets were tested in flume tanks before being installed on Belgian fishing vessel Stormvogel. The salient features of these nets are described and the method of making optimal use of these nets is discussed. Dugarden attended a flume tank session of Sustainable Fishing Foundation and learnt to experiment with different arrangements of doors and trawls.

Square mesh 'gentle' codend raises value

Article Abstract:

A codend with a square mesh that raises the value of catches, aids fuel efficiency and be more environmentally friendly to the ocean bottom is being developed at Sintef's flume tank, funded by the Norwegian Research Fund for fisheries and Aquaculture. The new trawl gives better selectivity, will be stronger and gentler to catch and will suit the new environmental restrictions.
