Flying start

Article Abstract:

The increasing number of passengers passing through Shenzhen airport in Guangdong province in Southern China is an indication of the province's economic potential. The current passenger forecast for the airport is pegged at 1.4 million. Passenger traffic is expected to increase to 5 million by 1995 while cargo traffic is expected to reach 100,000 tons. US cargo carrier Federal Express has expressed interest in operating cargo flights to Shenzhen. Other foreign airlines are close to signing agreements on flight services to the airport.

Same game, new rules: business puzzled by China's warning

Article Abstract:

The Hong Kong government's business deals will not be valid after 1997 unless they are approved by China. This Chinese ultimatum has slowed down business decisions such as the construction of the new airport, bus services and broadcast TV stations. Only two companies claim to be unaffected. China Light & Power's new profit-control guidelines were approved earlier by the Sino-British Joint Liaison Group, and Hong Kong Telecommunications obtained its franchise for international telecommunications links in 1981.
