Folded together

Article Abstract:

Two of Japan's major paper manufacturers plan to merge by Apr 1993. The consolidated operations of Sanyo-Kokusaku Pulp Company Ltd and Jujo Paper Company Ltd could influence price stability, since the resulting company will control 28% of the office paper market and 22% of that for newsprint. Although Sanyo-Kokusaku is involved in chemicals and construction materials, as well as in AIDS-drug development, the new company would be competing directly with Oji Paper. The expected savings resulting from the merger may prompt other companies to eventually merge.

Overcharged?

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong legislator Christine Loh has launched a sharp formal complaint against the colony's power companies alleging overconstruction to pad profits and other possible wrongdoing. China Light & Power and Hong Kong Electric, both monopolies, provide some of the cheapest power in Southeast Asia, and plenty of it: up to 60% above peak demand. That raises questions about new construction, and suggests problems with an agreement under which profits are set at 15% of net fixed assets.

Wanted: new gizmo

Article Abstract:

Japan's electronic companies need a new product-line to revive the sagging electronics industry. Firms such as Sony, Matsushita, Sanyo, Sharp, Toshiba and Hitachi are facing major slumps in both exports and domestic sales. The sale of Japanese cars, too, are declining, but the car industry will retain its hold on the international market, unlike the electronics industry.
