Folk revival: traditional festivals return as rules are relaxed

Article Abstract:

Traditional Vietnamese festivals and folk practices such as fortune-telling have flourished since the communist government stopped prohibiting them as a part of the switch to a freer social and economic order in 1986. Before then the communists had banned activities such as the Chu Dong Tu festival in Da Trach village east of Hanoi because they were wasteful and reactionary. The government believes that reviving the festivals will also revive traditional morality which has deteriorated due to worsening corruption, smuggling, prostitution and drug taking.

Off the job

Article Abstract:

Unemployment and underemployment have worsened in Vietnam since the government began to set up a free market economy in the late 1980s. The government declares that 6% of the 34-million-strong workforce is jobless, while some foreign observers estimate that the rate is actually 20%. Several developments have contributed to the rise in unemployment such as lay-offs by unprofitable state-owned enterprises and the return of thousands of Vietnamese from abroad.

Steady course

Article Abstract:

No major policy changes are expected in the aftermath of Laotian Pres Kaysone Phomvihane's death. The death of the leader who had led Laos since the Laos People's Revolutionary Party took over the reins of power from a US-backed government in 1975 would mean a change in the leadership of the ruling communist party. Speculations are rife as to who would take over Kaysone's positions as state president and president of the communist party.
