For fear of McJobs

Article Abstract:

France has a high levels of unemployment, and young people are particularly affected. This is a result of the French interventionist model, dirigisme. The government is tackling the problem through subsidies, but there is a need for greater flexibility in the French economy in order for unemployment to fall. There is a need for pension and health care reform, but opposition has made this difficult. The tax burden is high, and change is seen as undermining the national identity of France.

No room for rivals in Mahathir's Malaysia

Article Abstract:

Malaysian prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, has sacked his deputy prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, who was also finance minister. Anwar has attracted popular support and spoken at rallies, attracting over 30,000 people at one rally in Kuala Lumpur center. Anwar has been arrested and his wife has taken over his campaign. Meanwhile, Mahathir's economic problems could be exacerbated by a policy of encouraging credit growth, and economic issues could cause damage to Mahathir's position.

Trouble upon trouble for Kim

Article Abstract:

The government of South Korea faces opposition from labor unions, businessmen and bureaucrats. The large conglomerates are reluctant to restructure and firms most affected by bankruptcy are smaller firms where labor unions are less powerful. Unemployment is rising and labor unions are concerned about lack of help for the unemployed. Lack of money has hampered job creation schemes. The government aims to raise funds for economic reform through privatization.
