Forecasting Transport Requirements for District Primary Health Care in Ghana: A Simulation Study

Article Abstract:

Rural planning in developing countries is greatly affected by random factors such a vehicle breakdowns, and staff and weather problems. A transport requirements simulation study for a rural primary health care organization in Ghana is highlighted. A quick method is proposed for calculating the expected number of jobs per vehicle and availability levels. A simulation is then developed for corresponding probability distribution. The effects of random factors are compared. Policy conclusions are made according to the number of vehicles available for each district and staff incentive payments. Ghana used huge amounts of resources from 1960 to 1975, as it increased its number of hospital beds and personnel. Disease continued to rise, however. Tables of reported communicable disease data are included, as are tables and graphs of personnel and organizational data.

A utility measure for finding multiobjective shortest paths in urban multimodal transportation networks

Article Abstract:

The multiobjective path planning problem in urban multimodal transportation systems is analyzed. A method is derived to find optimal origin-destination shortest paths in multimodal transportation networks while minimizing costs, time and users' discommodity. A utility measure that considers users' propensities for various transportation modalities is also determined. Application of the method to a transportation network in Italy is discussed.
