Forum for the future

Article Abstract:

A number of key issues will be addressed at the meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (Apec) in Vancouver, Canada, between Nov 21 and Nov 25, 1997. The most important matter to be discussed will be the financial crisis in Southeast Asia. Trade liberalization has dominated Apec meetings over recent years, but it is likely that other issues will now be given more attention. These could include boosting the development of infrastructure in the region. Apec has come to be widely seen as a trade organization, but its main role is in fact to encourage economic development in the region.

Take risks and forge ahead

Article Abstract:

Asia has seen rapid economic growth over recent years, and the region's future now seems secure. Indeed, its living standards may well exceed those of Europe. However, care must be taken to ensure that Asia's economic growth continues. This will mean ensuring political stability in the region, encouraging a strong work ethic, adopting forward-looking but cautious industrial policies and avoiding placing too much emphasis on 'Asian values' as a justification for not making positive modern reforms.

Future shock

Article Abstract:

Many Asian companies are now beginning to experience financial difficulties as the region's economic growth slows down and problems such as rising wages start to emerge. The region's economic future is still reasonably positive, especially as the Tiger Economies have proved themselves able to adapt to changing circumstances. However, Asian companies are becoming less competitive and are realising that they must focus on adding value if they are to survive.
