Four chosen to design classrooms of the future

Article Abstract:

Architectural firms Cullum and Nightingale, Burrell Foley Fischer, Future Systems and Jestico and Whiles have been selected to submit designs for 11 new classrooms for Hallfield School in west London, England. The school, built in 1955, was designed by Sir Denys Lasdun, who will be one of the judges of the designs. The school is seeking funding from the Millennium Commission, which will probably not be forthcoming, so is also considering apply to the Heritage Lottery fund and English Heritage.

D&B must put design first in order to grow, says report

Article Abstract:

Design and build is currently declining in popularity in the UK, and must therefore adapt if it is to survive, according to a report entitled 'Designing and building a world-class industry' from Reading University. Design and build currently accounts for 23% of all new construction work, and this share is set to remain unchanged over the next five years. However, design and build has the potential to give a much higher guarantee that cost, time and quality criteria will be met.

Lacey creates 'Container City' for artists

Article Abstract:

The reuse of redundant shipping containers to build a collection of low cost work spaces for artists is discussed. The novel design, by Nicholas Lacey and Partners, uses 15 containers to make 12 studios and costs 325 pounds sterling per square metre to build.
