France and Australia mount joint patrols

Article Abstract:

Australia and France have agreed to stop illegal fishing the southern ocean. Tom Marshall, deputy director-general of Australian Customs Coastwatch, and Regis Gaillard, manager of French authority responsible for fisheries surveillance explain the provisions in a new treaty entered into by the two countries for the purpose. The treaty is effective from February 1, 2006.

Tanzania gets tough on the poachers - and reveals $200m tuna fishery

Article Abstract:

Tanzanian fisheries inspectors have started monitoring their exclusive fisheries zone to prevent tuna seiners and longliners from encroaching their territories. The benefits from the program called the Monitoring, Control and Surveillance project are discussed. The country's tuna stocks are also estimated to be almost $200 million.

Peru stalls ban on Pacific port access

Article Abstract:

Unregulated fleets are yet to be banned in Peru, which has not signed the Galapagos Agreement so far. The agreement is meant to salvage Pacific Ocean high seas stocks. Consequently, Peru's diplomatic relations with Chile are strained.
