France: room for les roast beefs

Article Abstract:

France has attracted more inward investment from Asia, the US and other European countries than has the United Kingdom, and much of this investment has come from the UK. France has been more successful at attracting capital-intensive investment and offers a central location, low inflation and a competitive private sector. There are also disadvantages such as high taxes and high unemployment. Poterntial investors should carefully research the market, and much information is available from public sources.

France: trouble at the top

Article Abstract:

The economic situation in France is gloomy, although a year ago companies seem to be recovering from the economic downturn. The budget deficit was worse than expected following the election of new president Jacques Chirac, and the franc wavered following rumours that Prime Minister Alain Juppee would have to resign. A series of reforms aimed at tackling the social security deficit led to national demonstrations, and the government has bee unsuccessful in reducing real interest rates.

France: vive la resolution

Article Abstract:

UK companies operating in France must be aware of a number of key differences between French and UK approaches to dispute resolution. The most important specialised courts will probably be the Tribunaux de Commerce for commercial disputes and the Conseil de Prud'hommes for employment issues. Written, rather than oral, procedures dominate the litigation process, and this can mean that commercial trials in France are handled much more rapidly than they are in the UK.
