Free to be bad

Article Abstract:

The Mexican media have become freer and the opposition has more chance of an electoral victory. The Institutional Revolutionary party (PRI) used co-option rather than repression, and this is more difficult to escape from. Tax benefits and subsidies as well as bribes would be linked to self-censorship. The media has become braver, but there are traces of the past. Media freedom is still restricted by archaic laws. Weak libel laws mean that irresponsibility is possible. Qulaity may be more difficult to achieve than freedom.

Talking to the world

Article Abstract:

Movable wooden type was used in China by the 13th century, and metal type was later developed in Europe. Railroads, steamships and the postal service were then developed, and the mail and transportation systems grew together in the late 19th century. Telephony, newspapers and broadcasting then changed communications, and this in turn helped to develop national brands. Satellite and cable TV, and the internet have since brought major changes. The web can be used for commerce, and can also give a voice to individuals.
