Free to bloom

Article Abstract:

The British prime minister, Tony Blair, has preached the virtues of the free market to the World Economic Forum, Switzerland, and his view represents the Ango Saxon model. Critics argue that social cohesion and equality are undermined by emphasis on the free market, while supporters claim that economic growth is hampered if the poor are protected too much. There has been a gradual move toward free market policies in mainland Europe, despite rhetoric that emphasizes old socialist ideals. There are also limits to faith in deregulation, since Britain is poorer than many European countries that have moved less toward a free market, and British productivity is lower than in Germany and France.
