French xenophobes win round one over Thomson

Article Abstract:

The French government has re-started the privatisation process concerning its 58% stake in Thomson-CSF and its troubled subsidiary Thomson Multimedia (TMM). The French privatisation commission halted previous plans to sell to the Lagardere group at a nominal price of one franc. Lagardere intended to bid for the remaining stake and then sell TMM to Daewoo of Korea for one franc. The French government will now sell the defence section Thomson-CSF separately in early 1997 and TMM in 1998 but it is not known whether the sale will be through a public offer of stock or a trade sale.

Lyon ring road wrangles

Article Abstract:

Political instability in France has postponed or cancelled many privatisation plans for infrastructure projects. Plans to build a Northern ring road in Lyon hit both construction and financial problems. The cost of the road is expected to be about $1 billion. Traffic flows are not expected to be as high as initially predicted, because of lower cost tolling on alternative routes. Problems caused by the Lyon ring road have affected other projects, such as the underground MUSE project in Paris and the Bordeaux to Bayonne road.
