Freshmen at the feast: Central Asian republics set sights on ADB

Article Abstract:

Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kirgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan, which were economically deprived by the collapse of the USSR, cannot expect immediate economic assistance from development banks. The states are eligible for membership in either the Asian Development Bank (ADB) or the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. While the ADB has added $4.3 billion to its credit, India and China must take precedence for any aid which may be extended. The economic problems of the Central Asian states stem from the major income deficits suffered due to the collapse of the USSR.

Problem drinkers: Japanese go from tiny cups of sake to bottles of Jim Beam

Article Abstract:

Alcohol abuse has become a major social and medical problem in Japan. Businessmen, female office workers, teenagers and other groups have replaced the traditional sake with stronger drinks such as beer and whiskey. The government's reluctance to combat the heavy drinking by informing the public and to treat alcohol dependency as a disease has aggravated the problem. Liquor laws must be reformed, including new restrictions on the sale of alcoholic beverages from vending machines.
