From circuits to packets: will the Internet steal the telephone business?

Article Abstract:

Deutsche Telekom introduced a pilot program that allows users to place international telephone calls via the Internet. WorldCom introduced a similar service for faxes. The Internet is not the ideal vehicle for voice transmission, but it will probably continue to edge into the telephone market.

Competition in the telecommunications industry will drive down prices and foster the development of innovative services. However, the positive impact of deregulation and increased competition is not immediate. New companies cannot initially survive competing head-to-head with the giants.
