From fur-trading to portfolios: Alaska

The generous settlement resulted in creation of 12 large and 200 smaller native corporations that manage the vast tracts - 44 million acres - the Alaskans received. However, a 10-year study of the native firms raises doubts about their low rates of return and management practices.
