Japan experienced an 8% decrease in industrial productivity in 1992. Unlike its prior recessions in the 1970s and 1980s, the country may face an enduring economic downturn attributed to changing political and social conditions and demands that affect economic policy.

The end of the beginning: Japan's recession

Hopes in Japan that the country may be emerging from its recession have been dashed by the continuing problems in the nation's automobile and electronics industries. Profits are collapsing, and the Japanese tradition of lifetime employment is adding to the strain.

Japan slows; no bad thing, either

Japan is in economic crisis: productivity is down, and the gross national product is shrinking for the first time since 1974. Politicians are dealing with the crisis by changing monetary policy, which may be the wrong approach.
