Futures, foresight and forward looks: reflections on the use of prospective thinking for transport and planning strategies

Article Abstract:

Although most planners tend to concentrate on short-term, project-based or local planning, there is a move towards seeking long-term trends within which strategic planning can be placed. There are a range of forward looking approaches, such as future studies without a dependence on forecasting in making policies relating to transport, mobility and planning. There has been a move away from forecasting, although it is still the most frequently used technique, but a more sophisticated view of the link between technology and urban society is needed.
