General Motors Corp. has agreed to a joint venture with Rochester Products, the United Auto Workers (UAW) Union, and the University of Alabama. Under this agreement, a failing service part plant is to be transformed into a research facility. Students will work on a real-life project: namely, solving the efficiency problem and avoiding a plant closing. Plant employees are contributing to a trust fund designed to defray the costs of finding cost-saving means. A successful project will keep the plant open and guarantee their jobs.
