Article Abstract:

The RPG group, which has decided to sell the Spencer's brand, says that it is perceived as too expensive for a market of middle- class consumers. The brand's main products include jams, tea, aerated waters, cigars, bread, liquor and a range of consumer durables. Spencer & Co has hotels at Bangalore, Ooty and Chennai which are managed by the Taj group. It also has many department stores. It posted a net profit of Rs2.02 crore on a turnover of Rs209 crore in 1997-98. (khr)
