GOVT CLEARANCE FOR TRANSGENIC CROPS LIKELY BY 2000

Article Abstract:

The Government of India may approve the commercial production of transgenic crops like mustard and cotton by the year 2000. This is subject to the crops conforming to the safety standards specified. The introduction of transgenic crops would not only make agriculture more viable in the country but also the production of cotton would increase by 15 percent and that of mustard by 20 percent. The use of these crops would also reduce the dependency on pesticides. In India, Mahyco Monsanto Biotech (India) Ltd of Mumbai has developed the transgenic variety of cotton and Proagro PGS (India) Ltd of New Delhi the transgenic variety of mustard. (uh)
