Gateway's exit may signal consolidation of PC makers

San Diego, California-based Gateway Inc., a personal computer maker, is cutting its worldwide staff by 25% and closing units overseas, including Japan, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore, in order to reverse large losses resulting from a worldwide slowdown in personal computer sales. The company's plans are discussed.

Winbond seeks escape from shaky DRAM sector

Article Abstract:

Winbond Electronics Corp. would like to expand beyond dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips due to falling market prices, but the company lacks the proper personnel to do so. DRAM prices have fallen below the cost of production. Worldwide DRAM demand is expected to fall from $31.5 billion in 2000 to $10.5 billion in 2001.

PC firms hope for the best

The personal computer sector in Asia appears to be in a market slowdown, although industry executives are divided over whether a quick rebound may occur. Global PC sales grew by only 9.2% in the fourth quarter of 2000, and shipments to the U.S. are forecast to decrease 6.3% in 2001.
