Germany's election: lumbering to the finishing post

Article Abstract:

Elections are scheduled for Sep 27 in Germany, and the opinion polls show a narrowing lead for the Social Democrat candidate, Gerhard Schroder. Chancellor Helmut Kohl looks less easy to beat. The Social Democrats are less divided than previously, but voters may have become disenchanted with them. The government has attacked the economic policies of the Social Democrats, but has not been enthusiastic about reform itself. Welfare reform has been weak, privatization has been slow, and the government was slow to embark on tax reform.

Germany's economic conjurers

Article Abstract:

The German economy is reviving, with exports helped by the low value of the German mark. Unemployment is still high, and economists argue that welfare and tax reform are needed to prevent higher levels of unemployment after the boom ends. Gerhard Schroder is the Social Democrat candidate for chancellor in Sep 1998 elections. He plans to increase education spending and cut taxes for the poorest, though this depends on the result of an audit of public finances. There is uncertainty anout economic andsocial reform in Germany.

Schroder's struggle

Article Abstract:

German chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, faces a sluggish economy, divisions within his Social Democratic Party, and a drop in his popularity. High labor costs have meant that many German companies have moved abroad, while eastern Germany still receives large subsidies. Schroder is seeking to carry out necessary reforms, and he is unable to suggest more radical meansures due to opposition from within his own party. Reform is necessary if Germany is to continue in its new role of economic strength in Europe.
