Article Abstract:

The peace process in Northern Ireland has encountered problems as a result of the unwillingness of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) to make progress toward disarmament. The political wing of the IRA, Sinn Fein, had given hopes that more progress would be achieved. The future of the peace process depends on the IRA and whether it wishes to achieve peace. A commitment to peace means that the IRA must disarm, or the peace process will founder.

Stymied in Ulster

Article Abstract:

The Northern Irish peace process has hit an obstacle in the reluctance of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) to disarm. The unionists have sought disarmament and Ulster Unionist leader, David Trimble, has stated that he will disarm if no progress is made. The IRA argues that it is not threatening the peace process, and there is a public perception that the IRA has a commitment to peace. The republicans may have lost their nerve, or promised more than they can achieve.

Gerry Adams's promised land

Article Abstract:

Gerry Adams, leader of Sinn Fein, initially appeared confident about the peace process, but this has changed following a dispute over disarmament which could lead to Northern Ireland's new parliament being suspended. Adams has persuaded the Irish Republican Army (IRA) to agree to a cease fire, and agree to compromises. Adams may be depressed because he is unable to convince the IRA to agree to disarmament, and this could explain why Adams appears to be depressed.
