Get up and go-go: bars and duty-free shops lift city from the ashes

Article Abstract:

Duty-free shopping and a nightlife transplanted from Manila's Ermita district are resurrecting Angeles City, devastated by Mount Pinatubo and the closure of Clark Air Force Base. The Philippine city sees an increasing number of men from Australia, Hong Kong, and elsewhere, many there for business as well as pleasure. New mini-hotels and bars are opening everywhere, and plans for redeveloping Clark include a 27-hole golf course, a 320-room hotel, and a new intl airport with a $3 billion price tag.

Article Abstract:

Thongbai Thongpao is a Thai lawyer and former political journalist who has devoted his career to defending poor people, peasants, workers and victims of human rights abuses. Thongbai's own experience as a political prisoner in 1958-66 under a right-wing regime, combined with memories of childhood poverty, instilled the desire to use his legal skill to fight oppression and injustice. Thongbai, now 67 years old, regards his work as too important to be set aside for politics.

Burning question

Article Abstract:

Arson attacks on 34 schools in southern Thailand have left the government in disarray. With no arrests or apparent progress in investigations, rumors attribute the assaults variously to Muslim separatists, a splinter Muslim group, rival political parties and even the government. Interior Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyut said they were motivated by domestic politics, but that may be an attempt to not offend Malaysia, where the Muslims often seek sanctuary.
