Ghost of a chance: Wu's release unlikely to mend Sino-U.S. rift

Article Abstract:

Several US concessions followed China's release of US human-rights activist Harry Wu, but the overall mood between the two countries is only slightly brighter. Some analysts say powerful groups in both governments have the potential to act irresponsibly, and the top leaders in neither can afford to appear soft. Nonetheless, US officials suggested President Bill Clinton could meet with Chinese president Jiang Zemin, and Clinton has strong incentives to improve relations with China, though Wu raised the difficult issue of human rights.

Tit for tat: Sino-American rift widens

Article Abstract:

Beijing still has supporters in Washington DC who hope to help it reverse a series of setbacks that have China rattling sabers and expressing its sovreignty over Taiwan. US sources leaked to 'Defense News' confirmation of Chinese missile sales to Teheran, highlighting the lack of communication channels with Beijing. The latter has reduced diplomatic ties, and expelled the children of Taiwanese and Hong Kong businessmen from expatriate schools. More striking assertions of authority are likely to follow.

Trading rights: Beijing exacts high price for copyright accord

Article Abstract:

China has acceded to US demands that it crack down on copyright violators but retaliated by simultaneously rejecting US efforts on human-rights and nuclear non-proliferation fronts. Furthermore, some experts doubt the value of the new trade regulation for US firms, whose legitimate goods may be too expensive for widespread sale in China. Beijing also released a report scoffing at the US State Dept's accusations of mistreatment of prisoners, including many held for religious or political violations.
