Give a helping hand

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly common for UK companies to establish employee assistance programmes (EAPs). In most cases, these programmes are run by external providers. EAPs provide counselling for many different work-related and personal problems, including alcohol or drug abuse and financial difficulties. Employers must take great care when establishing an EAP with respect to the procedures and protocols used. There must be effective promotion and connections with training opportunities.

Putting the lid on Pandora's box

Article Abstract:

Suppliers of information technology (IT) systems are now becoming more aware of the needs of small and medium-sized companies. Hewlett Packard, for example, has launched a programme for its resellers designed to give them the skills to sell solutions to small and medium-sized companies. Purchasing directly from manufacturers can allow smaller firms to make substantial savings, and manufacturers may also offer fixed price deals on installing small networks through their resellers.

Exercise your authority

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly widely recognized that encouraging employees to become involved in physical exercise can bring a range of benefits. Employees who exercise regularly become happier, are less vulnerable to stress and have lower levels of absenteeism. Smaller companies cannot offer comprehensive exercise facilities, but can still encourage exercise in a number of ways, including offering employees incentives to cycle to work.
