Glass and cement - a marriage of convenience

Article Abstract:

A team from the UK's Sheffield Hallam University has produced a new material called Metzzo, which has architectural and furniture design applications. The material is made from waste bottle glass, crushed into cullet, and mixed with cement, fines and additives. The concrete consists of up to 80% glass, and the strength of the concrete is dependent upon the size of the cullet particles. The material is moulded without heat, and the roughly-coarsened surface is polished to give a marble-like appearance. Metzzo can be used for furniture, flooring and cladding, as well as small artefacts.

Heathrow's bright prospect for workers and wildlife

Article Abstract:

A 2,500 mt betonite-cement 'cut-off' wall is a key feature of the 200 million pounds sterling Prospect Park Combined Business Centre being constructed by British Airways on a 115 ha site near Heathrow Airport, England. The wall, which will prevent groundwater contamination on the site, which is infilled with domestic waste, extends around 8 mt down into the underlying London clay aquiclude. All operations, including precasting, have taken place within the site boundaries, thus ensuring maximum control.
