Gloom (continued)

Article Abstract:

Most fund managers in Asia now have negative views about all emerging markets across the world, believing the developed markets offer a much safer investment option. It is not anticipated that Asian financial markets will revive in the near future. Fund managers have different criteria which will determine when they will be prepared to invest in Asia again. Many are widening their mandates from just buying Asian equities to selling them too. Pessimism about Asia is partly fuelled by fears that Japan could have a negative impact on the rest of the region.

Mid-life crisis; Asian Development Bank gropes ahead

Article Abstract:

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is responding to conflicting pressures by redefining its traditional role. Many delegates from the banks' shareholder countries remain unclear about what they envision for the ADB in the future. The ADB is increasingly acting to mitigate sovereign risk instead of lending directly to governments. This can include providing guarantees to banks who are wary of political risk in issuing long-term loans.
