Going into a retail spin: with a potential 3000 people per hour passing through airport lounges, careful planning is essential

Article Abstract:

Much of recent airport expansion is due to revenue coming from retail within the airports. BAA has recently extended the lounge and retail facilities at Gatwick Airport, following Heathrow's lead. The principle floor was opened to the sky by introducing glazed, barrel-vaulted rooflights, allowing natural ventilation. The retail units have maximum shop frontange but are of shallow depth, making every retail opportunity visible.

Business takes off at the airport, but not for all: increased commercialisation, competition and demand means deisgners face a challenge to keep airports comfortable for all

Article Abstract:

Airports have become centres of economic and social activity and there is concern that they will become poor-quality, disorienting and congested public places without responsible briefing and design guidelines. It is believed that airport buildings and facilities will be provided on a just in time basis, cutting capital costs where possible, but making the best use of existing facilities.
