Good times still rolling for the UK's goal-getters

The UK top equity arranger between 1991 to 1997 is Cinven which dealt with 1.8 billion pounds sterling worth of business split between 50 deals. Equity arranger 3i dealt with 218 deals during the period 1991 to 1997, totalling 1.3 billion pounds sterling worth of business. The largest UK-based buyout during the period 1991 to 1997 was the 749 million pounds sterling purchase of bookmaker William Hill by Nomura International. The high level of UK investment activity reflects a consistent committment to the market.

Denmark: Telecom takeover

Article Abstract:

Denmark's state owned telecommunications firm TeleDanmark has sold a 34% share interest to US-based Ameritech for 21.1 billion danish krone in 1998. The company will change its name to Tele Denmark. Ameritech plans to increase its share interest to 42% by purchasing 9% of Denmark's government shares in TeleDanmark, valued at 9 billion danish krone. The sale of TeleDanmark will raise 32 billion danish krone for the government, which will be used to improve Denmark's national debt.

A busy market for buy-ins

Article Abstract:

There were seven management buy-in deals completed in Liverpool, UK between the end of 1997 and the early part of 1998, with 17 mergers and acquisitions taking place in Liverpool during the same period. The market is being driven by cash rich institutions which are seeking to invest in profitable companies. A 5.9 million pounds sterling combined double cake industry management buy-in was advised by BDO Stoy Hayward, proving a double merger was as easy to manage as a single deal.
