Suharto's regional swing: ASEAN

Article Abstract:

ASEAN met on May 31, 1997, and agreed to admit three new members: Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. The inclusion of Myanmar was opposed by the US, because of Myanmar's repressive regime and human rights violations. However, Indonesia backed Myanmar's inclusion and has more influence over ASEAN.

Suharto's end-game

Article Abstract:

Indonesia Pres Suharto has been criticized for the corruption that pervades the government, but he has successfully managed to create a booming economy for the country. Some analysts believe the country will not fare as well once Suharto is no longer in power, since no successor is known.
