Goodness, it's Gus Dur

Article Abstract:

The new president of Indonesia, Abdurrahman Wahid, faces a difficult task since the economy has to be rebuilt, and Indonesia itself has 300 dialects and languages and 7,000 inhabited islands. Some voters wanted Megawait Sukarnoptri, whose party won the elections but did not secure enough votes in the assembly that chose the president. Wahid has to reform the banking system, and reassure some parts of Indonesia that may seek autonomy that the government is benign. Wahid is infirm, but he is also intelligent and charming, and deserves support.

New leader, new Indonesia

Article Abstract:

Abdurrahman Wahid has become Indonesia's president, though Megawati Sukarnoputri's party gained most votes in earlier elections, since the president is decided by an assembly. Megawati has become vice-president. There are concerns about democracy and the influence of Muslim groups, though the new president does not believe that Islam should play a political role. Wahid faces a major task due to the problems represented by the Indonesian economy and the need to tackle corruption.
