Green light for Grokster

Article Abstract:

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, California, has upheld the ruling of a lower court that two makers of file sharing software, Grokster Ltd. and StreamCast Networks Inc., cannot be held liable for online piracy of sound recordings and motion pictures. While representatives of the technology industry are pleased with the ruling because they see it as encouraging continued innovation instead of stemming it, representatives of the entertainment industry are reiterating their commitment to fighting copyright infringement. An appeal to the Supreme Court is being considered by the entertainment companies involved in the case.
