Growing giant

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's information industry has become the cornerstone of its national economic success, thanks in large part to agility and the ability to innovate at the market's fast pace. Its overall contribution to GNP in 1995 will be about $15 billion, or 6% of the total. Industry leader Compaq Computer will buy $1.5 billion in Taiwan-made inputs in 1995, up from $460 million in 1994 and 350% above 1992 figures. Overall 1994 shipments made Taiwan the world's fourth-largest exporter of computer products, and it will be No 3 in 1995.

Avoiding the crossfire

Article Abstract:

Uncertainty about Taiwan's future relationship with mainland China has led its investors and govt to shift the investing emphasis to Southeast Asia. In the wake of Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui's US visit and subsequent Chinese actions, indirect mainland investment by the island plummeted from $193 million in June to $63.4 million in Aug. Taiwan's links to Hong Kong are also under stress as the colony prepares to go under direct Chinese rule in 1997 and air and sea transportation agreements are revised.
