Growing the alliance

Article Abstract:

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will admit Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic in a move which is part of a wider change in Europe. This change includes the development of links across Europe as a whole, and of a new relationship with Ukraine and Russia. NATO is establishing itself as an agent promoting security in addition to its role providing protection against aggression. A revised Strategic Concept will set out NATO's role and the commitment of the allies involved in the organization. There is a need for NATO to look to the future.

One agent's night

Article Abstract:

Border guards in Arizona face increase risks of violence due to drug smuggling becoming more common. Drug smugglers are more likely to fire on border guards than are people involved in illegal crossings from Mexico. The number of border guards has been increased, and migrants from Mexico often simply wish to work to support their families and may already have work arranged in the US. The border guards may sympathise with these goals, but they have to enforce the law.

A bit of respect, please

Article Abstract:

There is extensive disagreement about how the United Nations should undertake its role as an international peacekeeper, and this means that this role is often carried out ineffectively. It must be recognized that the United Nations must not undertake certain tasks while acting as peacekeeper, as failure inevitably brings humiliation. It is now time to consider how to boost the United Nations' moral authority and to give it confidence in that authority.
