Growth in Asia to take off

Article Abstract:

Civil aviation in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to reach $900 billion in the year 2000, lead by markets of Japan and China. Global trade in the early 1990s amounted to $1 trillion, of which 25% was contributed by the Asia-Pacific region. By the year 2010, the region is expected to contribute 53% of the estimated $1.7 trillion in global air transportation revenues. Japan is expected to retain its position as the largest market in the region with a forecasted 91 million international scheduled passengers by the year 2010, and China's growing economy is expected to be the next big market.

Grand Canyon restrictions announced

Article Abstract:

The US Air Tour Assn has strongly opposed to the Grand Canyon flight restrictions announced by Pres Clinton in Mar 2000. Under the new rules, the number of commercial flights allowed over the Grand Canyon will be limited to 90,000 a year and the area for overflights will be reduced from 45% to 25%. The association said that the rules could force small air tour companies to close shop. It it is considering challenging the new flight restrictions in a federal court.

French love-hate affair with privatisation

Article Abstract:

The sale of a 20% stake in Air France is expected to raise between three to five billion French Francs. The sale is expected to take place during the first half of 1998 and Morgan Stanley and Credit Agricole Indosuez are advising the French government on the issue. The state currently holds 95% in Air France, however, its share may drop to 54% following the flotation and also plans to offer pilots an exchange of shares for a pay cut.
