Hindustan Lever Ltd manufactures toilet soaps, detergents, skin/hair care and personal products, tea, culinary products and ice-creams. Soaps and detergents account for 43 percent, personal products 11.3 percent, foods and beverages 32.3 percent and others 13.4 percent of its turnover. It has reduced its working capital needs in the last 2 years. Its sales increased by 23 percent to Rs7,138.2 crore and the net profit by 39.8 percent to Rs576.3 crore in the 9 months ended September 1998. Its operating profit margin was 12.6 percent. Hindustan Lever Ltd plans to expand its foods business by investing Rs70-80 crore annually in the next 3 years. (rk/kvr)

HLL has acquired the Ponds and Lakme brands. It is likely to register a 35-40 percent growth in net profit in 1998-99. Its scrip currently trades at Rs1,450. (uh)
