Godrej-GE Appliances made a net profit of Rs3.4 crore during 199798. Its sales were Rs749 crore. It had incurred a loss of Rs62 crore in 1996-97. Its turnaround was due to the success of new models from its 2 plants. Its frost-free refrigerators, washing machines and air-conditioners were popular. Rationalisation of costs and reduction in the time taken to distribute to retail outlets to 18-19 days (the industry average is 50-60 days). Many products under the Godrej-GE brand grew though the company spent little on advertising. It has been using the money on consumer research and product development. In 1997-98, it posted a 15 percent rise in the sales of refrigerators, 680 percent in washing machines and 120 percent in air-conditioners. It holds 18 percent share in the cooking systems market. The net profit of KG Denim Ltd has fallen by 75 percent to Rs1.28 crore in the first half of 1998-99 against Rs5.15 crore in the first half of 1997-98. The company's sales have increased by 19 percent to Rs71.05 crore against Rs59.75 crore. Its total expenditure has increased by 29 percent to Rs59.76 crore against Rs46.24 crore. Its interest cost has increased by 21 percent to Rs8.20 in the first half of 1998-99 against Rs6.80 crore in the first half of 1997-98. (khr)
