HVB aims to neutralize merger foes

Article Abstract:

Unicredito Italiano S.p.A. of Italy is finalizing the acquisition of HVB Group of Germany for approximately $19.58 billion. The Italian banking giant is planning to keep Key German executives including appointing Dieter Rampl of HVB Group as Chairman while Alessandro Profumo of Unicredito Italiano S.p.A. will be Chief Executive Officer. The European cross-border acquisition is awaiting shareholder approval and regulatory clearance.

Behind U.K.'s shift on bank bailouts

The Bank of England's financial assistance to British mortgage bank Northern Rock PLC indicates the seriousness with which central banks and government policymakers are regarding current credit market problems. The Bank of England has guaranteed all of Northern Rock's deposits, and has made an unscheduled injection of $8.78 bil. with the aim of preventing bank runs.
