Article Abstract:

The Indonesian government needed to address two major issues in the labor law which received parliamentary approval in Sep 11 1997. Widespread labor unrest focused international attention on human rights issues in Indonesia, so the government needed to show it was acting to protect workers. It also needed to prevent workers becoming a political force. The new law permits unions to be democratic and independent, and it allows workers to strike with pay in some circumstances. The law represents an advance, but it does not address some central issues, including corruption and bias in dispute-resolution boards.

Campus crusaders

Article Abstract:

Student protests in Indonesia have attracted faculty members and administrators who could be developing links with groups outside universities. The students are divided and have fragile links with other potential opposition groups in Indonesia. Amien Rais, a Muslim leader, is a charismatic figure among students, despite withdrawing from demands for a presidential succession. Concern over their employment prospects could either lead students to protest, or to study harder and stay out of politics.
