Hamid Karzai's key role in Central Asia

Article Abstract:

The successful conduction of the presidential elections in Afghanistan is discussed. It however does not imply that everything is smooth from hereon for the country's president Hamid Karzai. The daunting tasks of maintaining peace and stability in the region while ensuring development face Karzai. A list of do's and don'ts that Karzai must heed to is presented.

Pakistan's last bid for democracy

Article Abstract:

Pakistan's transition to democracy is discussed. It is believed that the parliamentary elections planned for January 2008, which aim to facilitate the shift to democracy, could leave the state vulnerable to Islamist extremists. Despite these problems, it is expected that the country's economic growth can improve the chances of democratization.
