French unions' vows to resist a common European currency may not be potent enough to block this and other economic reforms, such as privatization and deregulation. The public has become less supportive of the unions as talk of austerity has become commonplace.

Bullfight: France's state industries

French computer manufacturer Bull A!S suffered a loss of $585 million in 1991, despite a $100 million investment and new technology from IBM. Bull A!S would benefit from improved management and less control from the state.
