Has the bubble burst for American soap?

Article Abstract:

Audience figures are dropping for US daytime soap operas as a result of more women being away from the home and at work. There is also competition from other types of TV show which may depict real life and be cheaper to produce. Quiz shows and chat shows are also performing well. The internet may allow fans of soap operas to learn more about the characters, and they may be able to influence what the characters do. Soap operas are seen as an efficient way for advertisers to target women.

Voter on the Hill

Article Abstract:

'King of the Hill' is a TV show portraying the life of a blue-collar family from Texas. It has been voted the best show for 1997 by Entertainment Weekly, TV Guide, and Time. Hank Hill is a cartoon character who expresses the views of blue-collar workers who see themselves as possessing common sense. The accuracy of the portrayal can be surprising. Politicians should ask themselves what Hank Hill would think of their statements, if they wish to appeal to blue-collar white workers.

It's stupidity, stupid

Article Abstract:

Humor is affected by changes in fashion, and there appears to be a move toward political incorrectness, with jokes about stereotypes and bodily functions. There is a long tradition of transgressing boundaries in humor. South Park and other expamples of the new humor are not simply tasteless, but make a point beyond their bad taste. The humor may seek to appeal for more tolerance, and there may be concern about social problems expressed in these shows.
