Heathrow Express kickstarts Paddington renewal

Article Abstract:

Railtrack is involved in a pre-feasibility study for a second phase of refurbishment work at Paddington Station in London, England, costing at least 60 million pounds sterling. This would involve boosting track capacity and removing Span 4, the roof over the existing platforms nine to 14. A number of extensive development plans for the area around the station have been drawn up as a result of the forthcoming launch of the Heathrow Express link from the station. These include plans by Chelsfield and Godfrey Bradman for a large scheme of offices and residential buildings, along with cafes and new bridges.

Analysing London's cultural strengths and weaknesses

Article Abstract:

The UK government has failed to give a high enough priority to music, drama and dance, and this has had a negative impact on cultural activities in London, England, according to Sir Jeremy Isaacs, general director of the Royal Opera House, speaking at the sixth 'London in the twenty-first century' event. The National Lottery has provided some funding, but it does not cover day-to-day running expenses. It is necessary to double annual investment in the arts, thus ensuring that arts facilities in London reach an acceptable level.

Southwark Council has ambitious plans to make the Elephant & Castle area of South London a car-free area for regeneration. The plans could cost 800 million pounds sterling over 10 years, backed by 25 million pounds sterling from central government.
