The future: for reading only

Article Abstract:

The market for compact disk read-only memory (CD-ROM) has begun to grow after several slow years following its debut in 1986. CD-ROM makers shipped two million CD-ROM drives in 1992, expect to ship 5 million in 1993 and are forecasting a 20% growth rate in 1993-98. The rise in CD-ROM sales is attributable to three causes: the need for owners of workstations and personal computers to improve by adding CD-ROM drives; use of CD-ROM for distribution; and the large number of CD-ROM titles now available. Further market growth will require a reduction in price.

Tricks with light

Article Abstract:

The making of a semiconductor chip is intricate and technically involved. The chip production involves the use of photolithography wherein light is focused over a pattern and onto a silicon wafer containing a light-sensitive material. The technology has improved since the 1980s. In the 1990s, 256-megabit chips have been designed with the aid of phase-shift mask technology. While the Japanese have been the early developers of the technology, US companies such as Sematech have entered the race.
