Hidden agenda

Article Abstract:

The UN Transitional Authority on Cambodia (Untac) expressed concern over Khmer Rouge violations of key terms of the Cambodian peace accord signed in Oct 1991. The Khmer Rouge figured in a serious ceasefire violation in Mar 1992, and has disallowed access by Untac military officials to its territories. The Khmer Rouge complains about continued Vietnamese presence in Cambodia, but Untac officials suspect that it is trying to delay the peace plan to increase its control of rural votes in preparation for elections scheduled in 1993 under the peace plan.

Day of reckoning: Pol Pot breaks an 18-year silence to confront his past. In defending his murderous rule, he sheds new light on the dark secrets of the Khmer Rouge

Article Abstract:

Pol Pot is unrepentant about his 1975-58 rule over Cambodia, which involved mass murders and led to disease and starvation. He believes that the Khmer Rouge made mistakes, but notes that Cambodia would have been swallowed by Vietnam without their unrelenting struggle. He admits to ordering the killing of a long time comrade, but not the 14 family members, and he blames the mass starvation during hs rule on the Vietnamese. He claims that everything he did was for his country.
