Article Abstract:

Shaanxi is one of China's poorest provinces, but the interior capital of Xian leads the nation in construction of aircraft and is one of the areas for scientific, technological and educational development. The province provides a wealth of natural resources including coal and natural case. The province is working to develop infrastructure and is working to improve the environment for foreign investors.

A tale of two cities

Article Abstract:

Tianjin, China is assessing the impact of east Asia's economic crises will have in the region. However the setbacks should not deflect from its export trade with grew by $1 billion in 1996 to reach $5 billion in 1997. However Asia accounts for 60% of Tianjin's foreign investment. To aid in economic reform the government is encouraging investment in state owned enterprises.

Reform despite downturn

Article Abstract:

Shanghai, China's leading financial and commercial center has been impacted by the Asian crisis. Foreign investment that helped rebuild Shanghai, has been declining, especially investment from Japan. Shanghai is also suffering from shrinking demand and surplus production capacity. Growth in retail sales has also been declining.
