Hold that tune

Article Abstract:

Music has been affected by censorship due to its ability to stir emotions. Verdi's works were seen as a rallying call for unification in Italy, while 'Death in Venice' by Benjamin Britten was not played at an educational festival in Britain due to legislation banning schools from promoting homosexuality. The Nazis banned Jewish composers' works due to the composers being Jewish. Music without words may be banned for its links with an ethnic group, and some philosophers have been concerned about the sensuality of certain types of music.

Why Berlin's musicians don't need a maestro

Article Abstract:

A new conductor is to be selected by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and Simon Rattle and Daniel Barenboim are possible choices. The Berlin Philharmonic faces competition from the Munich Philharmonic and the Bavarian Radio Symphony, as well as other German orchestras. The Berlin Philharmonic needs to assess its direction, and the role of the new conductor will be important. The orchestra could simply decide on the pieces it wishes to play, inviting a conductor for individual programs.
